Bachelor Of Journalism & Mass Communication Technology (BJMCT)

Journalism is one of the most challenging yet one of the most rewarding and inspiring professions out there today. The ever increasing demand for up-to-date, comprehensive, informative news and highlights has pushed the boundaries of journalism. The MBS degree programme in Journalism & Mass Communication Technology (BJMCT) aims to groom passionate and aspiring journalists to not only fit in with the needs of the market but to stay one step ahead of the competition. This programme blends together a variety of instructional methodology to facilitate learning as well as stimulate students to further deepen their passion for this field. Students are exposed to the core of journalism and application of theoretical and practical knowledge in real world situations.

Programme Rationale

The level of increasing awakening of the population and demand for accurate information has necessitated the need to have professionals who shall be able to gather, analyze and deliver this information to the population at reasonably faster rate but accurate. This programme is meant to fill the gap that has existed in this area. The programme will provide students with a solid foundation in mass communication and business concepts, practices and skills. It further provides an introductory view of the world of media, by immersing students into TV, Radio and Print media production environments and introducing them to today's leading-edge media creation skills. Students will also be imparted with critical thinking skills to analyse articles, and strong writing and journalistic skills to produce their own articles for public consumption. Students will be trained in the basics of public relations, so as to manage corporate communications for their organizations.

Programme Objectives

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the programme, students should be able to;

  • Write and analyze articles for public consumption
  • Work in radio and television production environment

Career Opportunities in Mass Communication

Graduates will be well-equipped for a career in communications & media related industries. This includes opportunities in:

  1. Public Relations (PR agency, corporate communications)
  1. Journalism (news writing, reporting & editing)
  1. Marketing Communications (advertising, media planning, copy-writing)

Media (TV, Radio or print production & content creation)

Other graduates according to areas of specializations may undertake the following positions:-


Direct Entry

  1. UCE & UACE Certificate with 2 Principal Passes. (Ugandans).
  2. KCSE holders must have a minimum grade of C+ and above. OR ACE, GCE or A-level applicants must have at least 2 principal passes or its equivalent. (Kenyans).
  3. TCE & TACE Certificate with at least 2 Principal Passes. (Tanzanians).
  4. Qualifications that are recognized for University entry in their respective countries, these will always be vetted by the NCHE. (Other Nationals).

Diploma

  1. Related Diploma from a recognized institution of Higher Learning.

Mature Age

Candidates must be 25 years of age and above and must have sat entry exams from a recognized centre. NCHE recognizes the following institutions’ mature age examinations in Uganda:

  1. The eligible candidate must have got two principal passes at ‘A’ level in relevant subjects and studies.
  2. 5 passes at ‘O’ Level.

They should have been obtained at the same sitting not consecutive sittings.
